Peep Show

Eternal gratitude to Big Walters in Addis Ababa for sending seasons one to four on DVD as a much-appreciated birthday present (and a cautionary tale about what would surely have happened if a certain pair of bumbling idiots hadn’t removed themselves to separate continents about 10 years ago). Sorry that you have to skip to YouTube to actually watch the video embedded above but it is worth it. Season two is the best.

Peep Show is one of the few genuinely brilliant British comedies from recent times.

The episode (from season four, I think) with the barbecued dog nearly landed me in hospital when I first saw it.

It’s funny you should mention that because I hate it when bad things happen to animals in sitcoms and generally try to skip those episodes. It’s probably the one single thing that I’m 100% incapable of seeing the funny side of. On the other hand:

    (a) You can’t really avoid “funny” animal death in sitcoms, especially anything that considers itself somewhat “edgy”. It’s the biggest cliche going and even the best shows fall back on it from time to time. On the one hand, that means that it’s something you have to tolerate if you like TV comedy. On the other hand, it means that it’s inexcusably trite and lazy, from a creative point of view.

    (b) You’re about the millionth person to tell me that that’s the best episode of Peep Show. Haven’t got to it yet. I’ll just have to try and skip the gross bit when I get to it.

I must admit, it did occur to me after I’d posted that message that the episode in question might not appeal to you, for the very reason you mention. The more I think about it, the more I’m inclined to think that you won’t, even though (if memory serves) the main laughs are to be had from Jez’s one-man campaign of sheer idiot behaviour rather than the suffering of an unfortunate canine.

      We’ll see.
